What Is a Flightradar?

Flightradar is a global flight tracking service that provides you with real-time information about thousands of aircraft around the world.

But, what exactly is a flight tracker? And how does it work? Let’s learn more about the functions of Flightradar. A flight tracker is a type of app or website dedicated to keeping track of planes in flight.

Using Flightradar is as simple as turning on your device’s location and opening Flightradar. Once you do, Flightradar will automatically receive data from nearby air traffic control towers.

You can then track flights by simply following them on their route line within the Flightradar app or on this website.

Who Can Track Planes With Flightradar?

Anyone with an internet connection and a device that can access Google Maps can start using Flightradar. All you need to do is type in a valid flight number to have live flight data at your fingertips.

You can track flights from all over the world, from light aircraft to military jets, and set up alerts for your favorite airlines or aircraft types, making sure you know exactly when they’re taking off or landing so that you don’t miss them.

Why Do Some Planes Disappear From the Map?

One of the most common questions people ask when using Flightradar is:

Why do some planes disappear from my map after a few minutes?

There are two reasons for that.

First, not all aircraft transmit their position every second, and some may not do it at all. That is why you have to wait a bit longer until they appear on your screen.

Second, some aircraft just temporarily disappear from your map because they are behind terrain or another plane, and in fact, should be visible later again.

If you look closely at the map, you will notice that there are many planes over Siberia (for example) that are visible only now and then because of mountains and buildings but they fly in these areas all day long.

You should check back in a few minutes and the radar should normally show the plane again.

Why Are Some Flights Not Available on Flightradar?

While Flightradar is providing you with real-time flight information about thousands of aircraft around the world, it is not tracking all flights for various reasons.

There are reasons why a specific flight might not be available:

This flight has just taken off and is still climbing, which means that we have no altitude data for it yet. Depending on its cruising altitude, it will take some time until we can show its position.

Otherwise:

The ADS-B transmission is faulty. This can happen due to storms, or because there are not enough ADS-B receivers at the aircraft location, and/or satellite reception is not possible.
